The U.S. Virgin Islands and 40 countries kicked off the 2023 Pan American Games at an electrifying Opening Ceremony in Santiago, Chile! Virgin Islands athletes and swimmers Natalia Kuipers and Adriel Sanes were flag bearers for Team ISV. More than 35,000 spectators cheered them on as they held the USVI flag high.
Throughout the night, the stadium in Santiago was illuminated with thousands of lights. Along with the athletes and countries, performances and dancers took center stage, showcasing centuries of Chilean culture, history, and heritage. In the games 75-year history, it’s the first time the Pan American Games are being held in Chile. The U.S. Virgin Islands will have athletes competing in the first day of competition on Saturday, October 21st. Natalia Kuipers will compete in the Women’s 400-meter freestyle, and Adriel Sanes will compete in the Men’s 100m breaststroke. Team Virgin Islands will have a total of 12 athletes in six sports at the 2023 Pan American Games, competing in swimming, athletics, archery, sailing, fencing, and golf.
